Sitka & How to dress like an Alaskan

As we were traveling north on our Alaskan Adventure we noticed that most Alaskan locals were wearing the same foot ware: ExraTuf rubber boots referred to as “Sitka Slippers or “Juneau Sneakers”. Fishermen, Harbormasters, women on the streets of Juneau, clerks in the stores and other mariners such as ourselves. We have succumbed and both David & I bought a new pair of boots. We LOVE them…they’re practical, comfortable and will apparently outlive us. I’m not sure it would be appreciated in Bellevue, but here in Alaska, women wear them with dresses and when it’s hot, they just roll the top of the boots down a bit, which is quite a look. They are worn to weddings, funerals, work and parties.

We discovered when Jason & Lauren were here that they were wearing our Sitka Slippers, so when we arrived in Sitka, off we went to the local store to outfit the entire family with new boots…even little Dylan.

While on the subject of looking good, I’m adding a few photos of Sitka and Jason & family as they wouldn’t fit on the last blog.

  2. How wonderful that you can have such phenomenal experiences, sharing with family & friends as you cruise aboard Anegada! Love these photos, Susan. Thanks for creating this blog so we can enjoy vicariously!

  3. What a beautiful excursion you are having — such amazing scenery, wildlife, and discoveries! We are enjoying all your blog posts – and can only imagine the amount of precise planning and vision you have both given to this adventure — besides the art of navigating through icebergs! Seeing Ms. Dylan in these fabulous photos (and the ones Lauren has posted on Flickr) is so much fun – such joy!

  4. Hi Susan & Dave,

We really enjoy your blog and seeing all of your fabulous adventures. You do a wonderful job and it is greatly appreciated. Appears that everyone is having the time of their life. You will be pleased to know that Joe is re-building your house…..one board at a time, and we think you will be very pleased with the results (not counting the costs of course). Was very wise of you to not be here when they jack hammered out the initial driveway slab. Keep on cruising and sending that blog.

    • Jon: Thanks! So sorry about all the jack hammering and yes, you are correct, we’re glad we missed it. Glad to hear the house is coming along. We’ve been told it will really be done when we arrive this time. After a year, that will be fabulous. As much as we love the boat and are very comfortable aboard, it will be grand to unpack all those boxes and move back into the house!

      • The jack hammering was no problem for us and your driveway looks a lot better than that old black-top. We look forward to your return.

      • Thanks, Jon. We’re feeling the pull of home. After a year of being out of the house it will be fun to unpack all those boxes, rid ourselves of some of the misc. “stuff” and enjoy the new surroundings. Hope to be home no later than Labor day weekend. We’re currently in Shearwater, BC awaiting the wind to subside a bit out in Queen Charlotte Sound and Queen Charlotte Strait. Once we’re through that we’ll just have one more crossing- Georgia Strait to really watch for good weather.

        See you soon!

        Susie & David

      • Hi Sue and Dave. I have fished Sheerwater and it’s great for that as well as very scenic. Drop a line in the water while you are waiting but then again, you are probably fed up with fish. I go to the hospital on Sep.3 for my hip replacement so might miss your return docking. Have a safe cruise home.

      • We look forward to your return and learning about all your additional adventures that did not get on the blog. by the way, your blog thing is pretty nifty. I will make certain that all your dock fenders are in place for your crash landing.
